Designing Play for Connection: An Inclusive Playground at the Washington School for the Deaf

At the Washington School for the Deaf, the playground was designed as more than a place to play—it’s an extension of the school’s culture, learning environment, and commitment to inclusion. Rooted in human-centered design, the play strategy focuses on communication, choice, and shared experience, supporting students of all abilities in meaningful ways.

Working closely with Mithun and Skanska, our team helped shape a playground that encourages participation without separation. Play spaces and equipment were intentionally selected so students with varying physical, sensory, and cognitive needs can play together in the same areas—reinforcing connection, confidence, and belonging through shared play.

Visual communication was a key driver of the design. Open layouts, clear sightlines, and wide circulation paths support comfortable movement and interaction while signing. These features allow students to move side by side, strengthening peer relationships and reinforcing the social nature of play.

The playground offers a balanced mix of active and sensory-focused experiences. Swings, spinners, and slides provide opportunities for movement and challenge, while quieter elements support students who may prefer calmer play. Materials and finishes were thoughtfully chosen to reduce static and sensory disruption, creating a more comfortable experience for daily use.

Spaces for self-regulation were also integrated into the design. Nearby sensory areas with tactile and aromatic plantings offer students the ability to step away, reset, and re-engage on their own terms—ensuring the playground supports a wide range of sensory preferences.

At Northwest Playground, we believe inclusive design creates stronger communities. This project reflects that belief by prioritizing communication, shared experience, and thoughtful design choices that support every student. The result is a welcoming, intentional playground that is fully woven into daily life at the Washington School for the Deaf—where play builds connection and everyone belongs.
