The new playground at Geneva Elementary School was designed to provide students with a vibrant, inclusive outdoor environment that supports active play, exploration, and social connection. Developed in partnership with Bellingham Public Schools, the project transformed the campus playground into a destination where children of all abilities can challenge themselves, build confidence, and create meaningful play experiences.
At the heart of the project are engaging play structures that encourage climbing, balancing, sliding, spinning, and imaginative play. Students can explore a variety of accessible play experiences, including climbers, slides, swings, stepper challenges, sensory activities, communication elements, and an accessible whirl. These features were carefully selected to promote physical development, coordination, problem solving, and social interaction while creating opportunities for children with varying abilities to play together.
A dedicated early childhood play area provides a welcoming environment tailored specifically for children ages 2 to 5. Scaled play equipment, sensory-rich activities, interactive panels, and age-appropriate climbing and sliding experiences support early learning and development while helping young children build confidence and independence through play. The separate space allows younger learners to explore safely while remaining connected to the broader school community.
The playground improvements also included new surfacing, site enhancements, accessible pathways, fencing, and gathering spaces that help create a safe and inviting environment for students, staff, and families. A Gaga Ball area and additional outdoor play opportunities further expand the ways children can engage with one another, encouraging movement, teamwork, and healthy outdoor recreation.
For Northwest Playground, Geneva Elementary School reflects our commitment to designing inclusive play environments that foster growth, exploration, and community. We are proud to partner with Bellingham Public Schools to create a playground that will serve students for years to come while helping build connections through the power of play.
