Hillcrest Park - Mount Vernon, Washington

Accessibility extends throughout the playground, with wheelchair-accessible ramps leading to multiple elevated play areas, transfer stations, inclusive swings, and accessible pathways that connect the various play experiences. An AeroGlider allows visitors using mobility devices to roll directly onto the equipment and participate alongside their friends and family, creating opportunities for truly shared play.

The playground also recognizes that inclusion goes beyond physical access. Sensory-rich features, musical play elements, tactile activities, and communication panels create opportunities for children with different sensory, social, and communication needs to engage in play in ways that are meaningful to them. These thoughtfully selected features help ensure every visitor can explore, discover, and connect in their own way.

Community feedback played an important role in shaping the final design. Members of Mount Vernon’s Cascadia Club for adults with disabilities expressed the need for a larger slide that older children, teens, and adults could comfortably enjoy. In response, the playground includes a large slide that expands play opportunities and helps ensure visitors of varying ages and abilities can experience the excitement and fun together.

The laughter, music, movement, and connections taking place throughout the park are reminders that great play spaces are about more than equipment. They are about creating places where communities come together, where every person feels they belong, and where everybody has the opportunity to play.
