Kherson Park - Kent, Washington

Northwest Playground embarked on an exciting five-year design process to create a one-of-a-kind playground in downtown Kent. Recognizing the community’s need for an engaging play space, the City of Kent sought to celebrate its history as the home of lunar rover design and development—an essential part of NASA’s mission to the moon. Inspired by this legacy, we collaborated with Cre8Play to design a playground that honors the contributions of Kent’s Boeing engineers from the late 1960s. Working closely with Cre8Play, known for their innovative designs, we brought to life the Lunar Lander, a life-size replica of a lunar rover, along with an interactive mission control center. The playground is enhanced by immersive poured-in-place surfacing that replicates the moon’s surface, further deepening the space-themed experience. Every detail was carefully considered to ensure the playground not only provides fun but also serves as a tribute to Kent’s engineering history. The result is a truly unique destination playground that stands out in Kent. The Lunar Lander, with its intricate details and engaging features, has become a must-see attraction for both locals and visitors, blending history, education, and play in an unforgettable way. Our partners on this project included Cre8Play, NoFault, the City of Kent, and JA Brennan Landscape Architects.
