Northwest Playground is thrilled to have been selected to collaborate with the city of Spokane and MTLA (landscape architect) in bringing the vision for the regional playground at Liberty Park to life. The design, inspired by a volcanic theme, incorporates vibrant colors, large ground vine climbers, and a lava flow pour in place, providing an engaging and challenging play experience. In partnership with ID Sculpture, Playworld, DuMor, Zeager Brothers, Flexground, and installation partners Covey Construction, we successfully fulfilled the design intent. Special recognition goes to the general contractor, Spilker Construction, for their valuable contribution.
Custom Playmaker “Volcano” Structure: This large structure has multiple levels of challenge and includes adventure series climbers, a 9’ slither slide, a 360-degree spiral slide, a kaleido climber, a crazy bones bridge, and multiple play panels. One of the great features are the kinetic toppers on the structure that add some movement as they blow back in forth in the wind. The main feature is the mighty descent slide, which represents a large “lava flow” that can take up to 6 kids down the slide at the same time. This signature piece stands above the playground and draws kids in from all over the neighborhood.
Custom Playmaker 2-5 Structure: We paired the larger “volcano” structure with a mini version for the younger kids. This composite structure includes a 360-degree spiral slide, glide slide, a spiral climber, sensory play panels including a scavenger hunt panel, and ADA transfer station.
ID Sculpture Vines: The ground-based vine climbers were used to tie in the volcanic theming and to offer inclusive ground-based play. ID Sculpture carefully designed the vines to provide a physical challenge with imaginative play to provide a space where kids can thrive and feel an authentic sense of adventure and can safely explore their limits.
Freestanding Motion Play: The city wanted to include some motion play along with the climbers and landed on the inclusive basket swing and Zoom Trax from Playworld. The basket swing is designed for multiple users and is set at transfer station height and gives full body support to any users who transfer out of a mobility device. The zoom trax brings fun as user zoom from end to end on an overhead rail, like a zip line.
Lava Flow Pour in Place: We partnered with Flexground to pour the resilient play surfacing. The four-color surfacing pattern includes a lava river, swirls, and wayfinding circles throughout the play space.
The City of Spokane were thrilled with the play space, and it has been a huge it with in the liberty park neighborhood. With the community pool, softball fields, and a brand-new library on the same park space, Liberty Park has quickly become a destination space for area families to spend their days.
