The new playground at Northern Heights Elementary School was designed to create an engaging and inclusive environment where students of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and connect. Working closely with Bellingham Public Schools, the project transformed the campus play areas into dynamic outdoor destinations that encourage physical activity, creativity, and social interaction.
The elementary playground offers a wide variety of climbing experiences, slides, swings, balance challenges, and play events that help students build confidence, coordination, strength, and social skills through active play. Accessible routes and thoughtfully connected play components encourage children to move throughout the space while discovering new opportunities for exploration and adventure. Features such as the Mighty Descent slide, climbing structures, spinners, communication elements, and inclusive play experiences support a wide range of ages, abilities, and play styles.
Adjacent to the main play area, the Early Learning Program playground provides a safe and age-appropriate environment tailored to the needs of younger children. Scaled play equipment, sensory-rich experiences, and opportunities for imaginative and social play help support early childhood development while encouraging confidence, movement, and exploration in a setting designed specifically for children ages 2 to 5. The separate play space allows younger learners to enjoy developmentally appropriate challenges while remaining connected to the broader school community.
The playground also takes advantage of the site's natural topography through innovative hillside play features that add excitement and variety to the overall experience. Combined with seating areas and gathering spaces, the playground serves as more than just a place for recess. It is a community space where students can build friendships, develop important physical and social skills, and create lasting memories.
For Northwest Playground, Northern Heights Elementary School reflects our commitment to creating play environments that are welcoming, challenging, and inclusive. We are proud to partner with Bellingham Public Schools to provide play spaces that support student development, encourage exploration, and help build community through play.
