Washington School for the Deaf - Vancouver, Washington

The play strategy for the Washington School for the Deaf was grounded in inclusive, human-centered design that supports communication, choice, and shared experience. The playground was envisioned as an extension of the campus and learning environment, reinforcing connection, movement, and social interaction for students of all abilities.

Working closely with Mithun and Skanska, the design prioritizes shared play spaces rather than separate or specialized areas. Clear sightlines, open layouts, and wide circulation paths support visual communication and side-by-side movement, allowing students to interact comfortably while signing.

A Log Tangle 4.1 with a steel slide anchors the play space, offering multiple access points and a range of climbing, balancing, and sliding experiences at varying heights. A Giant Rope Swing and Double Rope Hammock encourage shared motion and cooperative play, while a double bay swing set with belt and basket seats provides inclusive swinging options for a range of mobility needs.

Fahr Industries sensory panels add tactile and interactive moments throughout the playground, supporting engagement and exploration. A Playworld communication board reinforces visual communication and language development, helping ensure the space is welcoming and usable for all students.

Together, the playground supports physical play, communication, and belonging—reflecting the values and daily life of the Washington School for the Deaf.
