Woodmoor Elementary School’s playground in the Northshore School District was completed in collaboration with Mara Kaplan, a playground design expert, and various stakeholders to create an inclusive, barrier-free space for imaginative play and community gathering. This well-conceived playground is more than just an assortment of slides, swings, and climbers; it’s designed to support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of children, accommodating diverse abilities and fostering a sense of belonging.
Inclusive playgrounds, which go beyond ADA compliance, offer opportunities for all children to engage, learn, and socialize, promoting overall child development and wellness.
Designing a school playground involves unique challenges, such as accommodating large groups of children for multiple recess intervals and ensuring the playground remains engaging for several years. Key elements of an inclusive playground include high-quality, multi-purpose equipment like swings, slides, spinners, musical instruments, unity climbers, overhead climbers, and communication boards, prioritizing pieces with high play value that can accommodate multiple children of all abilities. Sensory elements and unitary surfaces like safety tiles enhance accessibility and engagement, creating an environment that fosters social skills, creativity, and overall well-being.
